Gerry advises families and financial institutions on U.S. and cross-border estate planning issues and the formation and design of ownership vehicles for transferring generational wealth.
Drawing on more than three decades of experience as both a private client lawyer and trust company executive, Gerry Joyce helps clients address a wide range of wealth planning, risk management, and governance issues involving U.S. and non-U.S. jurisdictions, inbound and outbound succession, and the transfer of assets across borders. He regularly advises on U.S. estate planning strategies, jurisdiction selection for trusts and ownership structures, and legal and tax issues related to domicile, residence, and expatriation. Gerry also assists clients with treaty domicile analyses and other planning considerations tied to global mobility.
Gerry also advises founders and other business owners on integrating tax-efficient wealth planning with broader family and governance objectives. His work includes counseling on qualified small business stock, trust planning for descendants and charitable beneficiaries, and the selection of favorable trust jurisdictions. He also helps clients evaluate how investment and insurance vehicles fit within an overall planning strategy. In addition, Gerry oversees the administration of complex estates, including matters involving disputes, sophisticated tax issues, and distinctive assets such as fine art and trophy properties.
Gerry also advises registered investment advisers and other financial institutions on trust company formation, fiduciary governance, and risk management. He has board-level experience with state and federally-chartered trust companies, including service as chair, and counsels clients on establishing de novo trust companies under state or federal charters. Gerry is also is a frequent speaker and lecturer on trust and estate issues, including cross-border planning, global mobility and domicile relocation, and planning for family-owned enterprises.
